Numbness, Tingling, or Burning?

Do you have Numbness, Tingling, or Burning?

All of these symptoms are signs of nerve involvement. The two most common musculoskeletal causations for this are:

Central Nerve Compression aka “pinched nerve”

This would include disc injuries, stenosis, or other space occupying lesions.

Peripheral Nerve Entrapment

The result of nerve compression or adhesion. This is also the most common, most under diagnosed and the most easily treated problem.

Where the heck do these happen?!

The places in the body where nerves commonly adhere to muscle:

Sciatic Nerve at the back of Hip/Glute

This is commonly known as sciatica

Sciatic Nerve at the Hamstring

This is the most common cause of tight hamstrings

Cervical Nerve Roots at the side of the Neck

Most common cause of symptoms in shoulders, arms and fingers

Often misdiagnosed as thoracic outlet syndrome

Median Nerve at anterior forearm & Wrist

Known as carpal tunnel syndrome— rarely needs surgery

What is actually happening to my nerves?

Nerves function best and are symptom-free when they are able to pass freely through spaces and structures— kind of like how floss moves through clean teeth.

When nerves are pressed upon or become adhered to their surrounding structures preventing them from moving freely, this is called a nerve entrapment.

The most common manifestations of a nerve entrapment are pain, limited motion, tingling, numbness, and burning.

Check out the video below to see a demonstration of a nerve entrapment and how it is treated in our office!

What Causes Nerve Entrapment?

Overuse, underuse and trauma injuries are some of the top contributors to nerves becoming adhered. Some examples of overuse & underuse include but are not limited to:

Prolonged sitting and typing at a computer

Repetitive motions by athletes like throwing

Running

Small tasks involving the hands such as assembly line work and sewing
